Love Is Not Boastful or Proud

The Bible says that love is not boastful or proud. (1 Corinthians 13:4)

Granted, there can be a positive type of pride, such as admiring Christ or martyred Christians or even the good achievements of others, or a sense of satisfaction in something we did right. But in this context, the focus is on having an excessive amount of pride and an air of superiority in one’s attitude and words.

I have learned that pride is present whenever I’m critical or judgmental toward someone else. Pride is present if I refuse to accept correction when I’m wrong or fail to forgive those who offend me. Pride is present when I consider my needs as being more important than the other person’s. This can show up in the form of being more interested in voicing my own opinions than in listening attentively and respectfully to theirs. Pride may also appear in the form of seeking my personal comfort before theirs or placing more importance on my desires than theirs. Pride is behind selfishness as well as critical thoughts.

If left unchecked, pride can easily erupt in the form of boasting. Pride wants to draw attention to its self. Pride competes for the spotlight and is jealous of those who are getting the attention.

Only pride is convinced it has all the answers. Humility is always open to other’s views (unless they contradict Scripture, but even at such times, humility at least listens respectfully).

Thus, when I get frustrated with people because I think my way is right and theirs is wrong, I need to remember to treat them respectfully and seek solutions. Pride stubbornly insists on its way. Humility seeks peace.
